ABOUT US
Modern accounting, built on real experience.
We started Codec because we believe every business and charity deserves an accountant who actually makes things clearer — not more complicated.
Why Codec exists.
Too many businesses and charities put up with accountants who speak in jargon, disappear for months at a time, and send surprise invoices. We've seen it from the inside — and we knew there was a better way.
Codec Accounting was built on over 18 years of hands-on finance experience, including managing complex charity finances at one of the UK's leading cultural institutions. We've handled everything from SORP-compliant statutory accounts to VAT partial exemption, Gift Aid recovery, trading subsidiary accounting, and multi-million pound treasury functions.
But more than any technical skill, what shaped Codec was a simple frustration: why does accounting have to be so complicated for the people it's supposed to help?
So we built a practice around the opposite principle. Plain English. Fixed fees. Cloud-first technology. Proactive advice. And a genuine commitment to making your finances something you understand and feel in control of — not something that keeps you up at night.
Whether you're a sole trader filing your first return, a limited company director trying to be more tax-efficient, or a charity navigating SORP and trustee reporting — we bring the same approach to every client: real expertise, clear communication, and a service that fits how you actually work.
OUR VALUES
What we stand for.
Clarity over complexity
If you don't understand something, that's our problem — not yours. We explain everything in plain English because we believe clarity is a basic right, not a premium service.
Technology with purpose
We use modern cloud tools because they make your life easier — not because they're trendy. Automation where it adds value. Human expertise where it matters most.
Proactive, not reactive
We don't wait for problems to find you. We flag opportunities, remind you of deadlines, and keep your finances running smoothly in the background — so you don't have to chase us.
Honest pricing
You'll know exactly what you're paying before we start. Fixed fees, agreed upfront, with no hidden extras. If the scope changes, we'll talk about it first — never after.
Real accessibility
No call centres, no ticket systems, no "we'll get back to you in 5 working days." You get direct access to a qualified accountant who knows your business and responds like a human.
Built on trust
We're regulated by CIMA, registered with the ICO, and supervised for anti-money laundering. But more importantly, we earn your trust by doing what we say we'll do — every single time.
FAQ
Questions we get asked a lot.
-
We offer fixed-fee pricing agreed upfront — no hourly billing and no surprise invoices. Your exact fee depends on the complexity of your situation, but we'll always give you a clear quote before any work begins. Book a free consultation and we'll talk it through.
-
Very easy. We handle the entire transition — contacting your previous accountant, transferring records, setting up your software, and completing HMRC agent authorisations. Most clients are fully onboarded within two weeks with zero disruption.
-
Absolutely — it's one of our core specialisms. We have over 18 years of experience preparing SORP-compliant accounts, managing restricted and unrestricted fund reporting, and handling Charity Commission filings. We also advise on Gift Aid, VAT exemptions, and trading subsidiaries.
-
That's perfectly fine. Many of our sole trader clients start with a single self assessment return. There's no obligation to sign up for ongoing services — though most clients find they want to once they see the difference.
-
Yes. We're regulated by CIMA under their Member in Practice scheme, supervised for anti-money laundering compliance, registered with the ICO for data protection, and carry full professional indemnity insurance.
-
We're a cloud-first practice, so most of our work is done remotely via video calls, screen sharing, and our cloud software. This keeps things efficient and keeps costs down. If an in-person meeting would be genuinely useful, we're happy to arrange one.
